Overview

Stephan-Maria Aust is an artist and photographer born in Germany who now lives in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. His work is characterised by conceptual and socially critical photographic art. His artistic career began with early experiments in photography and painting. After graduating from secondary school, university studies and training in split-screen presentations and advertising photography, he founded his own studio for commercial and advertising photography in Düsseldorf and worked for numerous renowned clients for 33 years. Since 2003, he has been working on artistic projects that focus on situational authenticity and new perspectives.

Aust specialises in photography, particularly conceptual and minimalist works. One focus of his widely recognised series is on seemingly inconspicuous everyday objects such as manhole covers and street structures, which he portrays as individual personalities in their respective living environments. His landscape photography of the Hebrides captivates with its attentive and socially critical view of how we treat nature and climate change.

Aust's artistic goal is to question viewing habits, sharpen perception and challenge the viewer to adopt new standpoints and perspectives. His work seeks to reveal the seemingly banal or overlooked and introduce it into an aesthetic and socially critical discourse. The authenticity of the moment remains essential; Aust never arranges his motifs artificially, but stages the real situation with targeted aesthetic interventions through contrast, colour choice or black-and-white settings.

"My photography is both an invitation and a challenge: the world around us is full of individuals and stories hidden in everyday life. I show how special personalities become visible even in banal objects such as manhole covers or pieces of asphalt when we are willing to change our perspective and allow uncomfortable views. With my camera, I follow authentic situations without staging interventions – aesthetic editing always intensifies the message. Beauty and pain, remembering and forgetting – my photographs reflect the state of society as well as the secrets of people and things. They are an invitation to take a new look, to see and allow what is there."
